Being Human premieres Saturday, July 24, directly following the Doctor Who season finale. After the death of vampire leader Herrick at the end of season one, the supernatural friends are hoping they can now get on with their lives, but an even greater danger is lurking, within the very human world of which they want to be a part. Unbeknown to the trio, the mysterious Professor Jaggat and her cold-hearted colleague Kemp - religious zealots who have discovered the existence of vampires, werewolves and ghosts- are determined to carry out brutal experiments and destroy them. While Professor Jaggat and Kemp plot behind the scenes, werewolf George is coming to terms with the fact that he has Herrick's blood on his hands, and a girlfriend who knows his horrific secret. Turning down the door of death has implications for ghost Annie, but her confidence is at a peak and she's determined to stand up and be counted in the real world. And, with Herrick gone, Mitchell must appease an out of control vampire world - can he find a way to lead by example? THE SKINNY: While most American TV remakes of hit Brit shows tend to miss the magic of the original (unless you’re THE OFFICE that is), Syfy is taking a chance on redoing the hit BBC genre series BEING HUMAN about a werewolf, a vampire and a ghost living in a loft. Recently, iF spoke with Syfy president David Howe, and was able to get some interesting tidbits about the development of BEING HUMAN for the network. iF MAGAZINE: What’s the status of BEING HUMAN? DAVID HOWE: I think it’s very difficult to adapt. I think it seems easy, but so much of that show depends on the chemistry and execution and otherwise it could really easily go off the rails. We hired some great writers and they are in them midst of adapting it and we’re hoping to have it on air in the summer. iF: Who’s the writing team? HOWE: Jeremy Carver and Anna Fricke. Jeremy comes out the SUPERNATURAL world, so he has the genre cred, and Anna comes out of the more character based scripted drama world. The two of them are interesting together. The process has just started. iF: What’s the biggest challenge in taking what is essentially a six-episode BBC season and turning it into a 13 or 22-epiosde Syfy series? HOWE: You have to carry it out. I think the biggest challenge is how much do you take from it that’s there. Where are you getting repetitive and derivative and how do you not retread? We talked a lot about the U.K. OFFICE and the American OFFICE. So we’re about making it our own and yet holding on to what’s great about the original. iF: Have you picked a city to set it in? Massive Events presents: Housebroken a 3-day unofficial convention for fans of the brand new UK supernatural comedy series "Being Human" focussing on three housemates - a vampire, a werewolf and a ghost trying to live as humans. This event will be held from Friday 5th - Sunday 7th of February 2010 at The Park Inn Bedford. This unofficial convention aims to bring together fans of the series from all across the UK to meet some the stars and supporting cast and enjoy various events over the weekend. We intend to have at least 7 guests over the weekend, but if tickets sell well for this event we will try to get the entire main cast and supporting cast as well for the event!! There will be activities each day from the usual guest talks and photograph sessions to quizzes and late night themed parties - including 'Doctors and Nurses' & 'Undead Monster Ball'!! Current guests include: Russell Tovey plays the resident werewolf "George" - a once normal bloke who was attacked during a camping trip to Scotland that left him with this 'affliction' he is currently trying to deal with. Unearthed will take the audience on a unique behind-the-scenes tour to meet many of the actors who play the much-loved characters from the series including Aidan Turner (Mitchell), Russell Tovey (George), Lenora Crichlow (Annie), Jason Watkins (Herrick), Annabel Scholey (Lauren) and Sinead Keenan (Nina). Unearthed is unmissable viewing for anyone who loves Being Human. The documentary will also feature interviews with series creator and writer Toby Whithouse and will be followed by the first three episodes of the first series. The concluding episodes of series one will be shown the following Saturday. Recently re-commissioned for a second series of eight episodes, Being Human has proved a huge hit with the BBC Three audience.
